A Journey of Artistic Discovery Across Europe
Giorgi Papiashvili
Giorgi Papiashvili is a Georgian composer, musicologist, conductor and oboist born in Tbilisi. He studied Composition and Music Theory at the Tbilisi State Conservatoire and the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, under Maka-Maya Virsaladze, Veli-Matti Puumala and Ketevan Bolashvili.
He is the Founder and Artistic Director of the Bolnisi Classical Music Festival and the Founder of the Association of Young Musicologists. His professional work spans the Georgian National Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tbilisi State Conservatoire Contemporary Music Ensemble, and the Bolnisi Classical Music Festival Orchestra, alongside a teaching position at the Tbilisi State Conservatoire. His accolades include First Prizes at the Bartók Competition (Budapest–Tbilisi, 2015), the Kvernadze Competition for Symphonic Music (2018) and the Queen Ketevan Choral Competition (2019).
Papiashvili's compositional practice centers on musical structure, symmetry, dissymmetry, asymmetry, transformation, and the perception of musical time and acoustic space. His works often grow from a concentrated "musical seed" that unfolds into larger formal and sonic structures, reflecting his ongoing interest in the relationship between "micro- and macrocosmos" and in how musical form can mirror processes of nature, perception and transformation.Selected works include Ad Infinitum / Bodhi Tree, 9 Miniatures for String Quartet, Silhouettes for large ensemble, Sonata for Violin and Piano, and Flame Dances for percussion.
His research is closely intertwined with his compositional work, centered on musical structure, symmetry and transformation, with particular attention to the music of Anton Webern. His analysis of Webern's Op. 24 examines its "multidimensional symmetrical structures" and the relationships between modifications and transformations. For Papiashvili, analysis and composition form a single continuous process: research illuminates musical structure, while composition tests and develops theoretical ideas through sound. His principal research achievement is the discovery of a system of relational connections within the twelve-tone matrix and their hierarchical organization.
A self-taught conductor with a primary interest in contemporary music, Papiashvili has conducted the Georgian National Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bolnisi Classical Music Festival Orchestra, the Symphony Orchestra of the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet State Theatre, and the Tbilisi State Conservatoire Contemporary Music Ensemble. In 2026, he was selected for a conducting internship at the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet State Theatre, and has also completed an assistant conducting course with the Tbilisi State Conservatoire Contemporary Music Ensemble. His background as a composer shapes his approach to conducting, particularly in interpreting contemporary scores and in navigating the relationship between written structure, gesture and live performance.
As an oboist, Papiashvili focuses primarily on contemporary music. He has performed with the Consilia Ensemble and the Tbilisi State Conservatoire Contemporary Music Ensemble, taking part in contemporary music projects and festivals across Georgia.
In 2026, Georgio took part on Divertimento Ensemble's International Workshop for Young Composers as part of his Ulysses Journey.
