A Journey of Artistic Discovery Across Europe
Sophia Mitiku
Sophia Mitiku (b. 1995, California) is a Korean-Ethiopian singer and sound artist whose sonic practice swims in the intersections of music, ancestry, and landscape. Her work delves into a wide range of post-genre exploration resulting in contemporary productions of RnB, pop, trip hop, and electronic music. Her debut album ‘Copacabana’ was released independently in 2022 with critical praise for her innovative yet nostalgic soundscapes and sincere lyrical prose - receiving honorary mention from the Giga Hertz Award for Experimental Pop music. Her sophomore album 'all sickness is homesickness' was released in 2025.
In her current work Mitiku studies East African and Korean folklore and futurisms in contemporary music practices through themes of migration, memory, ritual, and change. She explores the dynamic interplay of tradition and modernity within the entangled poetics of land, memory, body, and social technologies.
Sophia presented an In-Situ performance after a residency as part of Islands of Change, at Gaudeamus 2025.
