Wei Ting Tseng

Wei Ting Tseng is a Taiwanese cellist, composer, curator, and interdisciplinary artist based in Oslo. Her artistic practice grows out of an early experience of imbalance between voice, power, and attention: growing up in a large household in Yuanlin, Taiwan, she often found her voice overshadowed by louder voices around her. This led her to a long-term inquiry into listening—not only as a musical act, but as a bodily and political condition shaped by acoustics, memory, gender, and space.

Wei Ting originally only wanted to obediently play the cello in an orchestra. But the emotions that never quieted kept pulling her toward places that “did not originally belong to her.” After many years of being a well-behaved child, she began to sense a quiet fear: if she stopped speaking altogether, would she simply disappear? Speaking loudly was never easy for her, which is also why she chose the cello. When the sound of the cello was still not enough to speak for her, she expanded her practice into installation, and visual scores, using video, image, gesture, and workshops as open systems where intuition and structure coexist.

Her work moves between contemporary, improvised, and early music, and between solo performance, ensemble work, and interdisciplinary collaboration. She is active in experimental music and contemporary art contexts across Europe and Asia, with presentations at venues and festivals including Ultima Contemporary Music Festival, nyMusikk Oslo, Nasjonal jazzscene, Only Connect Festival, Nasjonalmuseet, and Kunstnernes Hus.

Her debut solo cello album will be released through Nakama Records in early 2027.
