For the 19th edition of the festival in 2027, the aDevantgarde Festival is launching an academy programme alongside the festival for the first time. The six-day academy programme will take place in Munich at the same time as the festival.
Who can apply?
Young composers who are at the end of their studies or at the beginning of their careers. There is no age limit, and international applications are welcome.
Schedule
Application deadline: 15 November 2026
Notification of results: 10 January 2027 (at the latest)
Submission of composition: 1 May 2027
Academy period: 22–27 June 2027
What does the academy programme include?
Academy participants will receive individual composition lessons with Vladimir Tarnopolski and Katrin Klose. In addition, they will attend talks by other renowned personalities and will have the opportunity to present their own artistic work in the form of a lecture. The academy participants will be commissioned to compose a new work, which will be performed by ensemble via nova as part of the festival. The compositions will be developed together with the ensemble, with the rehearsal process being led by the academy participants themselves and professionally supported by the teachers. In addition, academy participants will gain insight into the festival through discussions with the artistic director, rehearsal visits, and free admission to all concerts.
What are the requirements for the new composition?
The new composition should be between 5 and 15 minutes long. Composers may choose whether they wish to write for the full ensemble, a smaller ensemble, or as a solo piece. The compositions must be submitted by 1 May 2027. If desired, a meeting with one of the academy teachers or a representative of the ensemble can take place before submission. The 19th aDevantgarde Festival is themed “URGENT”. The composition may relate to the theme, but it does not have to.
How much does the academy cost?
There is no application fee. The participation fee is €250. Accommodation and travel expenses cannot be covered. The festival will assist participants in finding accommodation.
Applicants in financially precarious situations may apply to have the participation fee covered — please contact the festival in advance (!) to arrange this.
What application materials are required and where should they be submitted?
- - Curriculum vitae (in tabular format)
- Letter of motivation and/or sketch for the new composition, including the desired instrumentation (including an alternative)
- 2 of your own compositions (score + recording, if available)
Applications may be submitted in German or English.
Applications must be submitted by email to akademie@adevantgarde.de by the deadline. Applications received after the deadline cannot be considered.
