What is this course?
A group online program fully dedicated to composers interested in contemporary marimba writing, focusing on:
• Contemporary marimba language
• Advanced instrumental techniques
• Sound dramaturgy and structural clarity
• Practical performance considerations
Sessions are collective, encouraging peer learning and collaboration.
Each composer will also have personal access to David Moliner throughout the course for questions, feedback, and mentorship.
David Moliner will guide you step-by-step to create a personal solo marimba work with professional insight.
Course Structure
• 10 online group sessions (1 hour each), once per month
• All sessions recorded with unlimited replay
• Ongoing creation of your solo marimba piece during the course
Special workshops on extended marimba techniques:
• Whistling inside the marimba
• Playing with needles
• Dead strokes and harmonics
• Multiphonics and resonance exploration
• Hand, nail, and object-based sound production
• Instrument construction and acoustic properties
Repertoire and Analysis
Dive deep into advanced, rare, and cutting-edge marimba repertoire with David Moliner, including:
• Bach’s Cello Suites transcribed for marimba
• Bruno Mantovani – Moi Jeu...
• Joseph Schwantner – Velocities
• Edgar Kopetzky – Kaskada
• Anna Ignatovitz – Toccata
• Suggested works by the mentored composers
Final Goal: Recording and possible premiere at Konzerthaus Berlin
At the end of the course, submit a sketch or completed solo marimba work.
David Moliner will record all submitted works in his studio, offering you a recording of your marimba piece. From these, he will select five pieces to premiere during the 2027–2028 season at Konzerthaus Berlin.
