A Journey of Artistic Discovery Across Europe
CLARA IANNOTTA - FLORENTIN GINOT - Composition Masterclass with Double Bass Focus
Casa Della Musica San Michele
The composition masterclass is aimed at all composers who want to present their work and
discuss topics ranging from compositional techniques to reflections on contemporary writing
with Clara Iannotta, with no age limit.
The course is also open to all double bass players who want to explore the contemporary
repertoire for double bass with Florentin Ginot.
During the course, there will be meetings dedicated to listening to and discussing the pieces
presented with the teacher, moments in which Clara Iannotta and Florentin Ginot will talk
about their own work, individual instrument and composition lessons, concerts, work with the
ensemble, and there will also be convivial and informal moments in which to discuss the
topics that emerge from the meetings in an atmosphere of sharing and mutual listening.
Individual Lessons (Composition)
The course days will be organised around individual lessons with Clara Iannotta, public
lectures and work with the ensemble. For the individual lessons, it will be possible to present
previously written works, drafts of new pieces and new arrangements of existing pieces. It is
highly recommended to provide audio (or audio/video) examples of the extended techniques
used in your works.
Individual Lessons (Double Bass)
There will be individual lessons with Florentin Ginot on the contemporary repertoire for solo
double bass. Those interested will also be able to work on improvisation and the use of
electronic materials (such as pedals) in double bass performance. In addition, the
ensemble's rehearsals and reading sessions will also be open to double bass students.
It will also be possible to collaborate with the Collettivo_21 ensemble in the performance of
one or more pieces for variable/performative ensembles written by the composers of the
course.
A final public concert, organised by Foresty International Music Festival, is planned.
Working with the ensemble
The contemporary music ensemble Collettivo_21 and Florentin Ginot will be available to
work with students during the course. Each student will have the opportunity to work with the
ensemble on a new chamber music piece written for the occasion, which will be performed
and recorded live during the final concert organised by the Foresty International Music
Festival.
In the application form, it will be possible to express three preferences for the choice of an
ensemble for which to write the new work - from among the following:
1. Double bass solo (Florentin Ginot)
2. Violin, cello, piano
3. Clarinet, cello, piano
4. Percussion (1 performer), electric guitar
5. Flute, clarinet, saxophone
6. Saxophone, Piano, Percussion (1 performer)
7. Full Ensemble (flute, clarinet, saxophone, violin, cello, double bass, piano,
percussion, electric guitar)
During the selection process, each composer will be assigned one of the ensembles
mentioned above, taking into account their preferences as much as possible. The pieces
should last no longer than 4 minutes; each student will have 2 hours of rehearsal time with
the ensemble, plus a dress rehearsal before the final concert.
The score must be submitted by 15 May 2026.
It is possible to include electronics in the new work - fixed media (tape) only. For
organisational and technical reasons, live electronics are not possible.
For information on the list of percussion instruments available, the technical availability of
electronics, piano preparation, guitar effects and, in general, extended techniques to be
used, please write to: info@collettivo21.com
Composers will also have the opportunity to write a piece with an open form and
instrumentation, including improvisational and/or performative nature, which will be
performed by the Collettivo_21 ensemble and double bass students.
The ensemble also offers individual time with each performer during the course, with the
opportunity to discuss extended techniques and other related issues.
Presentations
Each composition student will have the opportunity to present their work and discuss salient
topics (45 minutes each). A projector and audio system will be available for presentations.
Lectures and Workshops
During the course, lectures will be given by Clara Iannotta, Luca Guidarini and the
Collettivo_21 ensemble. The lectures will focus on the teacher's production, the aesthetics
and technical realisation of the amplification of acoustic instruments, and the relationship
between composer and performers.
In addition, on the first day of the course, the ensemble will present a concert featuring
music by Clara Iannotta, Zeno Baldi, Kaja Saariaho, and Giulia Lorusso.
The course will take place in Montaldeo - Italy.
