The competition aims at promoting the role of esteemed jurist and scholar Francesco Mario Pagano (1748 – 1799), one of the leading figures of Italian Illuminism, as well as father and martyr of the Neapolitan Republic of 1799.
The sixth edition of the Francesco Mario Pagano Composition Competition will feature the following new elements: to mark the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francesco of Assisi, participants are invited to set the *Canticle of the Creatures* to music in its original form, or to compose a piece freely inspired by it for string quartet in accordance with the competition rules. In conjunction with this, a special prize will be awarded to honor the memory of Don Beniamino Cirone, an important spiritual figure in the Brienza community, an opera singer, organist, and composer who served as chapel master in Salerno. Don Beniamino was one of the first figures to promote musical culture in the Burgentina community by supporting and sponsoring events. He was a great connoisseur of the band repertoire
The competition, open to composers of any nationality and citizenship and with no age restrictions, calls for:
a) The creation of a composition for solo soprano, string quintet (2 violins, viola, cello, and double bass), harpsichord, or organ inspired by the CANTICO DELLE CREATURE by St. Francesco of Assisi (Assisi 1181/1182 – October 3, 1226), as found in Attachment A, with a maximum duration of 10 minutes.
b) Alternatively, a free instrumental composition for string quartet (2 violins, viola, and cello), also with a maximum duration of 10 minutes and without any thematic constraints.
