Rethinking Composition in Electroacoustic Music
IRCAM is offering a workshop led by Mauro Lanza, with the collaboration of two IRCAM computer music designers, to approach electroacoustic composition as a practice of form in motion, where continuity, rupture, and transformation become central issues. We will explore different processes for constructing and articulating sound trajectories, transitions, and temporal evolutions. A specific attention will be paid to the construction of large forms and the dramaturgy of listening. Finally, the workshop will open up a field of experimentation around algorithmic tools, extending the expressive potential of “classic” technologies —samplers, drum machines, arpeggiators — by diverting them from their automatisms to make them more open and flexible instruments.
January 2026 – Online introduction meeting with all six selected composers, Mauro Lanza, the computer music designers, and the Ircam teams.
January to May 2026 – Online preparatory work sessions.
Each composer will then benefit from two one-hour individual online meetings with Mauro Lanza to discuss the project proposed in their application, as well as additional online and email exchanges with the Ircam computer music designers.
