One-year postgraduate’s Master program in Contemporary Music for Performers and Composers

The Alessandro Scarlatti Conservatoire in Palermo is increasingly establishing itself as an institution of excellence through the development of a range of advanced training activities.
The one-year postgraduate’s Master program in Contemporary Music for Performers and Composers will be launched in the 2026/2027 academic year. The programme stems from the need to enrich students’ completed instrumental and compositional training by further developing their interpretative and analytical skills in the repertoire of contemporary music, from the second half of the 20th century to the present day.

The Master’s programme stems from the need to enrich students’ completed instrumental and compositional training by further developing their interpretative and analytical skills in the repertoire of contemporary music, from the second half of the 20th century to the present day. More specifically, the programme aims, as its fundamental objective, to ensure the acquisition of the technical and theoretical skills necessary to approach the contemporary music repertoire at a specialist level from the perspectives of performance, interpretation and composition.

The programme will be supported by historical, compositional and technical-interpretative analysis, as well as by the interconnection with music technologies. The Master’s programme provides a course of advanced study specifically focused on the production and interpretation of contemporary music. The aim of the programme is to provide knowledge of contemporary performance practice by fostering an “osmotic” interaction between the performer and the composer.

The Master’s study programme is structured around individual lessons, group/collective lessons and workshops, as well as stages at institutions such as the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, the Academy of Fine Arts in Palermo, the Teatro Biondo, the Sicilian Experimental Film Centre (CSC) and other institutions of national and international standing. As a distinctive feature of the programme, the educational pathway includes participation in the production of recitals and concerts at the institutions hosting the stages.

The Master’s programme will begin in January 2027 and will comprise a total of 360 teaching hours divided over two semesters. The teaching hours indicated include classroom-based teaching, participation in workshops and stages, as well as orientation and training placements. The programme will conclude by 31 October 2027.

The EMC (Ensemble di Musica Contemporanea) will collaborate in the production of performances and concerts, which will constitute a fundamental part of the Master’s activities.
