ULYSSES JOURNEYS FOR PERFORMERS

As part of his ULYSSES Performer Journey, Lukas De Clerck brings his self-built telescopic aulos to this year’s Ultima Oslo Contemporary Music Festival. Reworking the ancient wind instrument through his own practice, he is joined by Norwegian jaw harpist Thov Wetterhus and composer and electronic musician Marcin Pietruszewski.
The programme begins with an acoustic meeting between the aulos and Wetterhus’s jaw harp, where drones, resonance and beating frequencies emerge between the instruments. It closes with Oto Aulos, where De Clerck and Pietruszewski bring the aulos into dialogue with computer and electronics. Across these encounters, the aulos is pushed into new territory, revealing different sides of an instrument that has travelled from antiquity into the present. The project is produced by Ultima, nyMusikk, CTM and Riksscenen.
