Ulysses Online: Careers in a fluid environment of contemporary music

Over the past decades, the landscape of contemporary music has changed profoundly. Long-established artistic profiles have begun to dissolve, while the professional structures surrounding them have undergone equally significant shifts. Today, we find ourselves navigating an increasingly fluid landscape of presenters, festivals, and traditional institutions, all increasingly compelled to question their own relevance and legitimacy within a disruptive and rapidly changing social climate.

 For artists, this environment creates a fundamental tension: how can creative freedom and artistic integrity be preserved while at the same time building the conditions for a sustainable professional existence?

Uli Fussenegger, born in Austria in 1966, studied double bass with Franz Dunkler and Ludwig Streicher. After several years as a freelance concert performer in the field of early music on original instruments (including with the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra and Concentus Musicus Wien), Ulrich Fussenegger specialised in contemporary music and became a member of Klangforum Wien in 1987. Intensive, long-standing collaboration with composers such as Georges Aperghis, Beat Furrer, Bernhard Lang, Matthias Pintscher and Alberto Posadas led to countless solo works for double bass, which Ulrich Fussenegger premiered. In addition to his international concert activities as a double bassist, Ulrich Fussenegger works as a composer and improviser.

Ulrich Fussenegger has been a lecturer at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts/Music since 2009, a lecturer at the Ensembleakademie Impuls Graz since 1999 and at the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music since 2002. He has also been an instrumental coach at the lucerne academy since 2017. Since autumn 2018, Ulrich Fussenegger has been head and coordinator of contemporary music at the Basel Academy of Music.
