CO-COMMISSION: MYKHAILO CHEDRYK

Mykhailo Chedryk was born in Svalyava, Ukraine, in 1997. He began his professional musical education at Uzhhorod Music College, where he studied music theory, before continuing his composition studies at the National Music Academy of Ukraine. He is currently completing his Meisterschuler studies at the Berlin University of the Arts under Elena Mendoza. Chedryk has received several awards for his compositions, including two scholarships from the President of Ukraine, 2nd Prize at the First Eurostrings Guitar Composition Competition, and the First Great Award in the Composition category at the 9th Manhattan International Music Competition. His works have been performed at numerous festivals and concert venues, including the 25th Contrasts International Festival of Contemporary Music at the Lviv Philharmonic, the National Philharmonic of Ukraine (Kyiv), Lviv Organ Hall, Up To Three (Berlin), UCMF 2024 (New York), Jauna Muzika 2024 (Vilnius), and Carnegie Hall (New York). 

Mykhailo Chedryk's new piece Emotion no. 2: Rush was commissioned in the context of the ULYSSES Platform by Warsaw Autumn and Lviv National Philharmonic. It explores a psychological state of wild, relentless motion. Driven by rhythmic momentum and rapidly evolving sonic textures, the work examines the experience of operating at the limits, where reaction becomes immediate and perception, action, and anticipation begin to merge into a single continuous process. The composition unfolds as a sustained surge of energy shaped by tension, determination, anxiety, and anticipation. Rather than following a narrative trajectory, it focuses on the internal mechanics of an intensified state, exploring the psychological dynamics of a condition in which movement becomes inevitable, and stillness is no longer possible. Situated within the conceptual framework of the Emotion series, the piece engages with states of heightened intensity and accelerated perception.

Mykhailo's piece is performed by NeoQuartet and soloists of the Ensemble Nostri Temporis. Founded in 2007, Ensemble Nostri Temporis is one of Ukraine’s leading contemporary music ensembles. Through close collaboration with composers of different generations and nationalities, the ensemble has championed the work of emerging artists, inspired numerous new compositions, and performed at major contemporary music festivals as well as in its own concert projects. An important aspect of its activity is the development of interdisciplinary projects combining new music with visual art, poetry, theatre, and film. Ensemble members Natalia Kozhushko-Maksymiv (flute), Bohdan Kozhushko (accordion), and Nazarii Stets (double bass) perform extensively both as soloists and as members of the ensemble. In 2026, they were invited to participate in Pro et Contra: The New Music Scene, a chamber concert series presented by the Lviv National Philharmonic as part of the ULYSSES Platform. 

Also within the framework of ULYSSES, Natalia Kozhushko-Maksymiv, Bohdan Kozhushko, and Nazarii Stets were invited to participate in the Polish–Ukrainian project Dialogue without Borders, to be presented in autumn 2026. This initiative was launched by the Ukrainian Institute, Myroslav Skoryk Lviv National Philharmonic, Warsaw Autumn Festival, and Neo-Arte Association.
